We learned Friday morning about a rural Atkinson couple found dead in what investigators think was a murder-suicide. More in ths news release from the State Patrol:
(Norfolk, NE)-The Nebraska State Patrol Crime Scene Response Team, in conjunction with the Atkinson Police Department, Holt County Sheriff's Office and the Holt County Attorney, Thursday, June 4, 2005, investigated the deaths of a rural Atkinson couple.
On Thursday, family members of 71-year-old John and 56-year-old Beverly Mack called local authorities to report the couple as missing. The family members indicated they hadn't heard from the couple since May 25, 2009.
Local authorities checked the Mack's home at 87595 475th Avenue about a mile southwest of the community of Atkinson, in Holt County, Nebraska and discovered two notes outside of a bedroom in the home and two bodies in the bedroom.
Further investigation by the Nebraska State Patrol Crime Scene Response Team revealed John Mack died from two .38 caliber gunshot wounds to the head. His body was found lying on the bed. His wife Beverly, whose body was found on the floor next to the bed, died from a single gunshot wound to the head. A .38 caliber revolver was found beneath the body of Beverly Mack. Investigators believe Beverly Mack fired the shots killing her husband, and herself. Indications are the shootings occurred sometime between the late evening hours of May 26 and the early morning hours of May 27, 2009.
