Husker football season will be here before you know it, and with it, a new documentary on the team's walk-on program.
NET Television releases the hour-long special in mid-August, but they gave a sneak preview Saturday at Stuhr Museum. It's part of the museum's "Sports and Leisure Weekend, featuring sports and games played by our pioneer ancestors.
Joel Geyer, NET Senior Producer, brought back the early days of the Huskers with the first part of another documentary, "Husker Century." But first, he introduced his newest project. A tribute to past and future Husker football walk-ons.
Last season brought a new coach, a Gator Bowl victory, and what Geyer calls, a rebirth of Nebraska's walk-on program.
"Now that Tom Osborne and Bo Pelini are back, both are passionate about walk-ons, and they're recruiting kids from your TV viewing area," he said. "The last 16 points of the Gator Bowl were all scored by walk-ons, one of those was of course Todd Pederson of Grand Island."
It's a stat true fans memorized, and one Geyer takes an hour-long look at in his documentary, "Walk Ons/Huskers' Edge."
"I believe, and this program argues, that it's the Nebraska players, with their hard work
and passion, that help give the program that extreme edge," he said.
He said Nebraska recruits nearly three times the amount of walk-ons as most college
programs. He interviewed 30 of them, plus the man many past walk-ons, played for.
"Tom Osborne said years ago, we need to find out how to get the best out of Nebraska," he said.
That's because Nebraska's geographic location and climate are hard selling points for southern stand-outs, the film points out.
While it might be hard to attract out-of-staters, fans fans watching the preview say they prefer the return of their home-town boys.
Ryder Piekos, who traveled to Stuhr Museum from Linocln with his wife and mother, said,
"I'm glad to see that coming back because that was their success story for many years. I
think not to appreciate that program, you'd have to be from Oklahoma or Texas," he said smiling.
