A quick spray of compressed air is an easy way to clean a keyboard. For some though, it's also a quick and deadly buzz.
Randy See of the Grand Island Substance Abuse Coalition said, "We had one last week in Grand Island it caused the death of an elderly lady."
Marceline Forst was picking fruit when an out of control pickup ended her life. Prosecutors said the driver was high. A can of Dust Off was found with him, along with a receipt from only 11 minutes earlier.
It's legal to buy, so some rationalize it's somehow a safe way to get high without getting caught.
Jolene Stalker, Program Manager at the St. Francis Drug and Alcohol Treatment Center said, "You can conceal it very easily. People aren't going to question it. It's not like drugs you got to hide them, find a buyer. You can get this quick and inexpensive."
Stalker said it's often kids who seek help for huffing.
"A lot of them are even 12, not even teens yet or younger when they start this and then they'll move and graduate up," she said.
Before they move to pot or meth, they'll mess with stuff found around the house.
"It can be done all day long," she said. "Can be done in schools, done anywhere because it's easy access. They can have it in their locker and do it and be gone in seconds."
Huffing leaves users feeling slow, weak, and clumsy. It can lead to depression,
brain damage, even cardiac arrest.
Cans are clearly labeled with the warnings. Randy See pointed out the Dust Off brand even adds a bitter taste, trying to prevent a tragedy.
He said, "It can be a devastating situation when it's misused."
Symptoms of huffing include an increased heart rate, nausea, loss of coordination, even problems with cognitive thinking.
Reporter's Notes by Steve White:
Stalker said many teens are ashamed of abusing inhalants. While some will admit to pot use, they are embarrassed by huffing. She said they need a strong network and family support to overcome their addiction.
See pointed out there are several products that can pose this kind of threat. He said Dust Off has been responsible to label its products, and has even added a bitterant to make it taste sour.
Among the side effects, Stalker said huffing can lead to memory loss, muscle weakness, headaches, nosebleeds, even cardiac arrest. She said that can happen on the first use or after repeated use.
