KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - 2 of the largest commercial property owners in Wyandotte County are agreeing to pay more than $6 million in disputed property taxes.
County Administrator Dennis Hays said late Thursday that The Legends, a shopping center near the Kansas Speedway, has agreed to pay $3.9 million in outstanding property taxes.
Nebraska Furniture Mart, which is also near the Speedway, has agreed to pay $2.8 million. That's less than half of what the county says the giant retailer owes.
Both entities are challenging the county's assessments of what their properties are worth, saying the estimates are too high. Despite the payments, talks on the assessments will continue.
But the tax payments will help shrink the county's expected $15 million budget shortfall.
