A train collides with a semi, causing millions of dollars worth of damage. The accident happened just south of Oxford along Nebraska Highway 46 late Wednesday afternoon.
A semi-trailer hauling the base of a wind turbine was crossing the railroad tracks when a train, going about 60 MPH, collided with the rear of the trailer. Both the train locomotive and semi-trailer were totalled in the accident, and the wind turbine base was also damaged.
Damages total an estimated $3 million, in an accident that could have been avoided.
Trooper John Wagner, of the Nebraska State Patrol, said,"[the semi driver] had a pilot vehicle. The pilot was out here also, keeping an eye on everything. She told him it was fine. No one saw the train or the crossing arms, and they proceeded on across the railroad tracks."
A crane had to be called in from Kearney to help clear the turbine base and trailer, which together weigh about 120,000 lbs.
