BELLEVUE, Neb. (AP) - A convicted sex offender has been arrested after a confrontation with police near a Bellevue elementary school.
Robert Swoopes faces charges of careless driving, disturbing the peace and making terroristic threats.
Parents spotted Swoopes loitering outside Leonard Lawrence Elementary School twice last week. The second time, on Friday morning, they alerted authorities.
Bellevue police chief John Stacey says Swoopes tailgated a patrol car that arrived at the school. When officers got out of the car and approached Swoopes, he threatened officers.
Swoopes served 16 years in prison for breaking into a woman's home and trying to rape her at knifepoint.
Swoopes has said he's no longer a threat to society.
