Quaint. Charming. Peaceful. They are all words used to describe small town Nebraska. Now, you can add sexy to that list.
The author of the book "Small Town Sexy ... The Allure of Living in Small Town America" highlights towns across the country, including Holdrege, that use charm to attract people
looking for change.
"And then she gets into my story.. how my wife and I moved to Holdrege from Colorado," explained Phil Soreide, a newcomer to Holdrege who's featured in the book.
Back in 2005, Soreide's wife, a librarian, wanted to de-stress and leave her job at a law firm. She spotted an ad for a library director in a small town called Holdrege, Nebraska.
Soreide said, "They were so friendly to us. They really wanted us to come and really rolled out the red carpet for us."
Big trees. Brick streets. A historic center and a much lower cost of living. The Soreides were hooked.
"You're always running into people you know and that's a nice warm kind of feeling," said Soreide.
The Soreide's experience can be found on the pages of "Small Town Sexy." Author Kim Huston
found out about Phil's story from his neighbor, Betty Sayers, who runs the web site www.nebraskaruralliving.com
"It's just a kick," said Sayers.
Sayers gets about 17 thousand hits a month. Proof small towns are bringing sexy back.
Sayers commented, "People would like the joyfulness of our lives and the simplicity of it and the organic nature of it because we often write about growing our own food and walking on trails."
The main point of the book is that you don't have to work out of one of those big, high city skyscrapers to be successful. Thanks to computers and technology, you can live just about anywhere.
"We're just as wired here as they are in Chicago," said Sayers.
With a background in advertising and marketing, finding work wasn't a problem for Phil. He even designed Sayers' web site.
"My business has been thriving ever since I've been here, actually," he explained.
He admits he was seduced, but doesn't regret it.
"Not a minute," he said. "Having the experience of living in a small town I wouldn't trade for
anything."
