Inmates work toward education

Associated Press - November 7, 2009 2:04 PM ET

NEWTON, Kan. (AP) - Inmates at a Kansas prison are getting an education.

Inmates at Harvey County Detention Center are involved in a new program at the jail led by Harvey County Sheriff T. Walton and the local schools.

The school district donated three computers to the jail program.

Inmates who will have extended stays at the jail can do work toward a GED or Newton High School diploma.

Officials say many of the students appreciate the time they are allowed to leave their cells for the classroom and the opportunity to advance their education.
