Associated Press - November 16, 2009 7:15 PM ET

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. (AP) - A Nebraska City man accused of fatally shooting his girlfriend has pleaded no contest to a reduced charge of manslaughter.

Thirty-1-year-old Jeremy Haag entered his plea Monday in Otoe County District Court. He initially faced a first-degree murder charge for the killing of 27-year-old Adessa Esser. In June, she was found in her home suffering from a gunshot wound. She later died at a hospital.

Haag told police he and Esser had been arguing before he accidentally shot her.

He will be sentenced next month. He faces up to 20 years in prison and a $25,000 fine.
