Sehnert's Bakery has been a McCook landmark since 1957. They roll out the fresh baked goods every morning. After that first bite, diners make sure they come back for more.
"One of the stops that many of them make is to stop at the bakery and pick up some peanut
butter rolls or something they remember from their childhood," said Walt Sehnert.
Walt Sehnert began the bakery in McCook, but the tradition began long before that. The Sehnert family has owned bakeries dating back to the 1500's and there's no plans to quit anytime soon.
"I think when I got back out in the world, I figured out this is a pretty nice place to be. So I wanted to live here and the opportunity was here. And it's a great place to work."
The bakery has changed over the years. The Bieroc Cafe was added and they have several live performances. They also have great sandwiches like the apple planter. The bakery also bakes and sells pizza crust to different restaurants all across the state.
"The business has had to change with the way society changes and it changes faster and
faster," said Matt Sehnert.
One thing that remains the same is the homemade stollen bread. It's a German Christmas bread that the Sehnert's have made for years.
"Every time this time of year, I think of my family, my grandfather, and great-grandfather, my father. They were doing the same thing I'm doing now, just getting up early and making stollen
bread."
Generations of Sehnerts have gotten up early to bake delicious specialties. Even more have enjoyed them and made it their tradition to stop at Sehnert's.
