New trial sought for 1992 Kansas murder case

Associated Press - November 28, 2009 6:14 PM ET

OLATHE, Kan. (AP) - Attorneys for a Kansas City-area man convicted of the 1992 killing of his wife are seeking a new trial.

At issue are two hairs found clutched in the hand of Barbara Haddock. Her husband, Kenneth Haddock, was convicted in the killing.

Early testing of the hairs showed that they were "consistent" with her husband's hair. Forensic analyst testimony at the trial said that Haddock was included in the 7.4 percent of the Caucasian population that could have been the contributor of the hairs.

Some testing after the trial revealed DNA of an unknown person was found on the hairs. Haddock and his lawyers say that's enough to warrant a new trial

The Lawrence Journal-World reports that soon it will be up to the Kansas Supreme Court to decide the issue.
