Autopsy results have come back on a Burwell man and his 2-year-old daughter who were found dead in their home Tuesday morning.
According to Garfield County Attorney Dale Crandall, preliminary autopsy results indicate Christopher Melling, 31, and his daughter Aimee Melling, who would have been three Jan. 12, died from shotgun wounds to the head.
Investigators believe Christopher shot Aimee and then killed himself.
Authorities have been unable to determine the exact date and time of the shootings, but believe they occurred sometime between Saturday night and Tuesday morning, which is when officers found the bodies following a concerned call from a neighbor.
The deaths came shortly after 33-year-old Tammy Melling, Christopher's wife, was arrested by Burwell Police on charges of domestic assault stemming from a complaint from Christopher that his wife threatened and struck him during an argument. She was booked into the Valley County Jail Friday, Jan. 3 and released on bond the next day.
While the incident is part of the investigation, Crandall says investigators do not consider Tammy Melling a suspect in her husband's and daughter's deaths.
The Nebraska State Patrol is continuing the investigation with the assistance of Burwell Police and the Garfield County Sheriff's Office.
