Join the Nebraska Brass for "American Dances," the season finale of their 2007-2008 season, "American Premieres."  At this final concert, the Nebraska Brass will feature the world premiere of Lincoln composer, Nolan E. Schmit's new work for brass quintet, "PRISM: The Dance of Light."   This piece is dedicated to the memory of late UNL Professor Emeritus Robert M. Beadell, Nolan Schmit's first composition professor during his undergraduate career at the University of Nebraska.  In addition to the commissioned piece by Schmit, the Nebraska Brass will perform a variety of  music including  "Dance Suite" by Leonard Bernstein, "Sophisticated Lady" by Duke Ellington and "Song Without Words" from the second Military Suite in F by Gustav Holst.

Nolan E. Schmit is a resident of Lincoln, Nebraska and a 1993 graduate of the University of Nebraska with a bachelor's degree in music education with an emphasis in composition. He received his master's degree with the same emphasis in May of 2003. He was twice awarded the Ida M. Vreeland award for outstanding achievement in composition from the University of Nebraska, was teacher of the year at Orchard, Nebraska in 1995 and was the 1998 recipient of the Jack R. Snider Outstanding Young Band Director Award, given by the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association. In 1999, Nolan received the Outstanding Young Music Educator Award from the Nebraska Music Educators Association. In addition to serving as the general music specialist at Arnold Elementary School, Mr. Schmit is an assistant band director at Lincoln East High School, is an adjunct professor of music at Doane College in Crete, Nebraska and has the privilege of being the "Voice" of the University of Nebraska, Cornhusker Marching Band.  He is a published composer of band and choral music through the Neil A. Kjos Music Company of San Diego and Heritage Music Press of Dayton, Ohio.  His works have been performed by ensembles throughout the world.

"PRISM: The Dance of Light" is a musical exploration of the seven colors of the rainbow in seven miniatures for brass quintet. Each movement represents the feelings and impressions the composer experiences while pondering the essence of each color.
