McCain Inducted into "Hall of Losers"

On the day President Obama officially takes office as the 44th President of the United States, a Kansas museum honors the guy who lost the Presidential Race, John McCain; albeit for a much different reason.

John McCain came in second to President Obama. Some say second place is the first loser. It's probably frustrating to come so close to the Oval Office, but Mr. McCain can take comfort as one small town in Kansas proves second place is more important to them than first.

President Obama made history as the first African-American Commander-in-Chief. But as millions honor the 44th President of the United States, John McCain made history of his own as the 59th presidential loser.

"We're in the Also Ran Gallery that was established in 1965; defeated, but not forgotten," said Museum Curator Lee Ann Shearer.

McCain was hung on the wall next to John Kerry in this shrine of presidential wannabe's that is nicknamed the "Hall of Losers."

"These guys are not losers. They contributed so much to this country in everyday life," Shearer said.

"It's incredible to see the number of people who put themselves out there and for them, inauguration day is totally different. But without them, the democratic process wouldn't be the same," said Diane Becker. who went to the museum to witness the unique McCain induction.

Every major party wannabe is adorned with a wood frame, a short biography, and an official Library of Congress portrait.

"I like reading about them and piecing it together, trying to understand why and how they wanted to run for this office," said Shearer.

And even though it's called the "Hall of Losers," the curator says these are some of the most influential and successful men of American history; past and present.

"We have not forgotten them and we want to honor them and keep their memories alive," Shearer said.

The museum has excluded minor party candidates since 1980 because of dwindling space. The museum is free and is the only one of its kind in the United States.
