The following is a press release from the Dawson County Sheriff's Office:
At approximately 10:14 p.m. July 4, 2009 the Dawson County Sheriff's Office was notified of an injury accident at the intersection of Hwy 21 and County Road 759 of rural Lexington, Dawson County Nebraska.
The preliminary accident investigation indicates that a 1990 Ford Tempo driven by Humberto Avila, age 42 of Lexington, Nebraska was westbound on County Road 759. Humberto Avila violated the stop sign at the intersection of Hwy 21 and County Road 759 and was struck in the driver's door by a 2003 Dodge pickup driven by a 15 year old Arapahoe youth. The Dodge pickup was northbound on Hwy 21.
Humberto Avila was pronounced dead at the scene, a passenger of his vehicle Amalia Huerta, age 42 of Lexington, Nebraska was transported to Tri-County Hospital in Lexington by Lexington Fire and Rescue. Two passengers in the Dodge pickup, the father of the driver, and the driver's brother were uninjured. Seat belts were in use by all occupants in both vehicles.
Assisting with the accident was the Lexington Police Department, Lexington Fire and Rescue Department and the Nebraska State Patrol. This fatality accident is still under investigation by the Dawson County Sheriff's Office.
