Nebraska's Big Rodeo

Posted: Updated:

For 89 years, fans lasso their way to Nebraska's Big Rodeo in Burwell. It gets even bigger this year with the addition of brand new skyboxes.
"You get to see the cowboys get ready for stock. You get to see the stock get loaded. You get to see the other half of rodeo you don't get to see," said Rodeo Board member Dale Seidel.
The rodeo began roping and riding in 1921. Thousands come out and see chuck wagon races, bull riding, and wild horse races. None of it would be possible without Burwell's many volunteers.
"I think it makes our community stronger and it allows our business to run functionally for a year without being strapped. I think it's just good for everybody and everyone just knows it takes every one of us to make it happen," Teresa Seidel who is in charge of advertising for the rodeo.
Over at Dry Creek Western Wear, they see more business in July than at Christmas. It's the go to stop for authentic western wear.
"The week of rodeo is just fantastic because you have so many people from out of town coming in and out. We meet people each year that come back year after year," said Dry Creek's Jodee Burnham.
Rodeo fans also give back to the community. Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night is on Friday and Wrangler sponsors the National Patriot Night on Saturday.
"They want to help not only everybody in the community where they're at but everybody across the country."
A new view will get fans up close to all the cowboys, cowgirls, and bulls. It's adding to the tradition that's 89 years in the making.
