Steve Nelson, a farmer from Axtell, was elected Tuesday to replace Keith Olsen as president of the Nebraska Farm Bureau.
NTV broadcast the news live as the bureau held their annual convention in Kearney at the Younes Convention Center.
Olsen, retiring, after nine years as president, said he is anxious to get back to his family farm in Grant, Neb., where his son is overseeing operations currently. "My wife and I knew I would retire at this time," he said, adding that he's enjoyed his time speaking on behalf of Nebraska farmers.
New president Nelson told NTV that after serving as vice president for nine years, he's ready to take on the challenge of a rigorous schedule that the president has to take on. "Things will change fairly quickly. We'll start with the board meeting tomorrow and the following day I'll be in Lincoln, and it's pretty much a full-time job with opportunities to travel throughout the country and around the world."
Nelson's position as vice president has been filled by the second vice president; however, the second vice president position will be filled by a person elected by the bureau board members.
