Suspects on the run from an attempted homicide in Colorado fired shots at a state trooper during a high speed chase late Friday night near Kearney and now the public is urged to be on the lookout for a wanted man on the run.
Around 10:30 Friday night, a trooper clocked a 2004 Subaru Impreza traveling at a high rate of speed on Interstate 80 just east of the Odessa exit. A pursuit began when the vehicle would not stop for the trooper.
The vehicle got off the interstate at the Kearney exit and headed south on Highway 44. At that point, troopers say several shots were fired from the vehicle at the trooper's patrol car striking it at least one time. The suspects then turned east onto Highway six traveling into Minden, before turning north onto Highway 10.
NTV's Colleen Williams reported via Facebook, "Found myself in midst of high speed chase during commute home. Passed by car going 100+. 8 police cars and copter not far behind. Car passed me about a mile west of Minden then turned on highway 10 heading for Interstate. At this time, no official press release. This is all from my own observations. 45 minutes later and still shaken up."
The pursuit ended about a half mile north of the Fort Kearney Feedlot when the vehicle went into the east ditch and the two occupants fled on foot.
State troopers established a perimeter and began searching for the suspects using with an NSP SWAT unit along with Police Service Dog (PSD) units. In addition, the patrol's Aviation Support Division was called in.
The helicopter called in was able to use infrared technology to spot a suspect in a field.
Around 2:00 Saturday morning, the pilot used the Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR) to find a heat signature in a field near the feedlot. An NSP dog team entered the field and located one of the suspects.
Troopers arrested 22-year-old Aleksandr Voznyuk of Sioux Falls, SD. He was jailed at the Buffalo County Detention Center.
At large is 18-year-old Petr Strizheus of Harrisburg, South Dakota, near Sioux Falls.
Area residents are warned to be on the lookout for Strizheus. He is described as at white male, 5'7" tall, 180 lbs. with brown hair and hazel eyes. Strizheus was last seen wearing a black fleece jacket with blue jeans.
Authorities continue to search for Strizheus who should be considered dangerous. Both suspects are wanted for attempted homicide following a Friday, January 26, carjacking in Brighton, CO in which shots were fired at the owner of the vehicle.
Citizens are asked to call 911, the NSP Troop C Headquarters (308-385-6000) or local law enforcement if they have information that may aid in the location of the suspect.
The Nebraska State Patrol was assisted by the Kearney, Buffalo & Phelps County Sheriff's Offices and the Kearney Police Department.
No law enforcement was injured in the pursuit which last approximately 20 minutes and reached speeds in excess of 100 mph. The arrested suspect was treated for a canine bite before being lodged in the Buffalo County Detention Center.
