Tim HigginsKearney Public School Board member Tim Higgins has been elected to the Region 13 seat on the Nebraska Board of Directors (NASB). His first meeting as a voting board member was Jan. 21 in Lincoln.
Higgins was nominated to fill a seat vacated by Marilyn Bohn, of Ravenna, who was elected as vice president of the organization at the NASB Delegate Assembly last November.
The Nebraska Association of School Boards represents the volunteer governing bodies of nearly 260 school boards and ESUs throughout the state. These governing bodies are responsible for the education of approximately 98 percent of Nebraska's 300,000 public school children.
NASB represents the views of the public school governance teams at the state capitol and provides training and support for the volunteer citizens that assume positions of leadership on local school boards throughout the state.
"We are thrilled to welcome Tim Higgins to our board," said ASB Executive Director John Spatz. "He has a long history of commitment and contribution to education in Kearney, which gives us reason to believe he will contribute significantly to our state level discussions."
Higgins has served on the Kearney Public Schools Board of Education for 11 years, currently serving as board secretary. He was president of the Kearney board during a successful $45 1 million bond campaign.
He has attended a wide array of professional development activities offered by NASB and the National School Boards Association. Higgins is also past president of the Greater Nebraska Schools Association.
Higgins will be finishing the final two years of Bohn's term as part of the 24-member NASB Board of Directors. The board meets five times per year to direct the programs and services NASB provides to school governing boards across the state.
"We are happy to have quality people such as Tim who are willing to take a leadership role in our organization," said NASB President Brian Holcomb, who himself is a school board member from Coleridge. "He has been tireless in volunteering his time to school board service. We are gratified that he has agreed to volunteer even more of his time to advance the cause of school board leadership throughout the state."
