A new place for a fresh start, that's what one woman said about the new Crossroads building in Kearney. Wednesday, marked the grand opening for a project that was long time coming, as the center begins to change the lives of those less fortunate in the area.
I've lived a pretty rough life and been running around for a few years, so I was pretty
excited when there was going to be a program available in Kearney for people who need a place to go and get their life together," said a Crossroads resident that asked to remain nameless.
That place is the Crossroads Center, who opened their doors Wednesday for the
Kearney area.
"We are here for those that don't have a home, said Jerry Bumgardner, Executive Director of Crossroads Missions. "We're here with a four phase program that will actually allow people to come and evaluate where they are in life, and where they want to be in life. They don't have to suffer for anything less we want to offer them more."
"I see it kind of as a life rehab more than drug or alcohol treatment. It's a life rehab for
me really, so it's learning how to live as an adult," said the resident.
Although she was a former inmate at the Nebraska Correctional Center for Women in York, she now has a goal to become independent.
"I want to be able to get a job and get my own place," she said. "I never as an adult had my
own place and can keep a job for very long and just a lot of independence on my own.
For a center that prides itself on changing lives, she in turn hopes she can do that as well
"Ultimately, in the end I want to give back more than anything," she said. "I want to give back what I'm given right now, because it's hard to find a fresh start
