A 44-year-old North Platte woman, whose newborn baby mysteriously died last month, has been sentenced to 26 days in jail after pleading no contest to a reduced charge.

Christine Sytek pleaded no contest late last month to a reduced misdemeanor charge of negligent child abuse, was given credit for the 28 days she had already served and released.

She was arrested on New Year's day and originally charged with felony intentional child abuse after her newborn died of unknown causes.

Police say around 1 a.m. on Jan. 1, Sytek waved down a passerby near Eighth and Willow streets in North Platte and said her baby wasn't breathing. The child was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

According to Lincoln County Attorney Rebecca Harling, Sytek was uncooperative when questioned by police. When she was arrested, Sytek told police she was 28, but fingerprints indicated that she is
44.

Authorities say the baby weighed only three pounds.

Autopsy results haven't been released.
