Bedbugs Found in One Room at UNK

Posted: Updated:

Officials at the University of Nebraska at Kearney have confirmed a case of bedbugs in a residence hall.

Dr. Tony Earls, UNK director of Residence Life and associate dean for Student Affairs, said, "At this time, we believe that it is isolated to one room. We have checked rooms on both sides of, as well as the room below, the affected room, and none were found."

A pest control company has been on site to conduct an in-depth inspection. The affected room, as well the rooms on both sides, and  below, the affected room are being treated. All four rooms will also have two follow-up treatments.

"We have a protocol in place and will be following that protocol," Dr. Earls said. "If students in the residence halls suspect bedbugs, they should contact residence hall staff immediately. Students seeking treatment for bites should contact Health Care."

While bedbugs are a nuisance, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, they are not known to transmit disease.
