With childhood obesity becoming an increasingly unsettling epidemic, a rural Nebraska community hopes to change that trend

Holdrege area families learn about a program to help them embrace a better lifestyle. It's "Building Healthy Families". Based out of UNK, it focuses on children's weight loss but with the support of the whole family.

With the obesity rate of children in Holdrege on par with the national average, officials say the program couldn't come at a better time.

"Obviously this program was designed to help fight childhood obesity, and I think any community especially ours, which is online with the national standards, we all know it's a big epidemic in every community and hopefully this program," said Holdrege YMCA's Reve Fries. "We're lucky enough to bring to this community can further help the kids that are struggling, the families that are struggling with that."

The 12 week "Building Healthy Families" program will officially start on February 26th at the Holdrege YMCA.

REPORTER'S NOTES: For more information on the program or if your child qualifies to be part of the program, contact Reve Fries, Health and Wellness coordinator at Holdrege's YMCA of the Prairie, at (308) 995-4050.
