High Farmland Prices Deters Youth

As farmland prices continue to soar, it may be difficult for young Nebraskans to get that first step into the agriculture industry.

Today, Nebraska appraisers came to Kearney to talk about the problems some investors can have when buying and selling farmland.

Appraisers say the high prices can be a burden for younger people trying to plant their first crop.

"It's difficult, it always has been probably harder for the younger person to actually buy land. What is out there right now there's chances to lease land and programs that the state has that are good for farmers offer owners tax credits," said appraiser Dean Badie.

Even some of those credits can't get the young farmers to buy any land. Appraisers say they need to find a way to get the next generation involved.

"We had sessions earlier this week where we do our training we looked around the room and about the average age is 60 and so I think throughout the ag industry we need to find ways to get younger people started in the biz not just in farming so we need to get a little creative to get them going," said Badie.

He also says people like to invest in farmland because you can physically see your investment, unlike the stock market which he says is good for Nebraska.
