Businessman Randy Gard has resigned from the Grand Island City Council, a post he was elected to in 2010.

Gard cited work responsibilities as a factor in his decision. The former Chief Automotive CEO has most recently been working for the Bosselman Family of Companies.

Mayor Jay Vavricek said, "It is with much regret I acknowledge Randy's impending resignation from public service on the council.  He has been instrumental in many key decisions and admirably served.  His expertise and advice on the city council have been greatly appreciated and will be missed.  Aside from his departure from elected public service, I know he will continue to make a difference in our community and wish him much success in his expanded employment role and responsibilities."

Gard said, "Being on the city council has been exciting, rewarding, challenging, and I have enjoyed every minute of the time spent serving the citizens of our great city.  I have the utmost confidence in the administration and council to continue to drive change, push for improvements, and keep keenly focused on the opportunities in Grand Island."

The mayor asked Gard to continue serving Ward 1 through March, giving the city time to find a replacement. The mayor would like to have the seat filled on Monday, March 26.

Anyone interested in filling that vacancy is invited to send an application and resume to city hall. The deadline to apply for the open seat is Friday, March 9.

For more information about applying for the Ward 1 open city council position, contact City Administrator Mary Lou Brown at 308-385-5444 ext. 140.
