UNK held a mock hostage and active shooter exercise allowing officials to practice and prepare for unexpected situations.
Drills like this usually happen once a year at UNK.
By the very nature of these things, there are unexpected events and they always have surprising elements during the drill, to make it seem more realistic.
Today's exercise was a mock hostage with an active shooter.
"I feel safe knowing that the police would know how to handle situations like this." UNK Sophomore Mackayla Miller said.
With drills like this, schools are able to react to dangerous situations to better prepare themselves.
"This is a good example of preparing for the worst and certainly hoping that we'll never have to face anything quite like this."
During these exercises, law enforcement does not use any live ammunition however fake gunshots and loud screams are in play during this event to make the situation seem as real as possible.
