They dedicated their lives to saving lives, but despite lengthy efforts...Rural/Metro employees won't be able to save their jobs. The decision for Hastings to take over emergency services pushed Rural/Metro to shut down their Adams county branch leaving 30 families jobless.

"It means the ending of a decade for me," said Marlys Schmidt. "Something that I'm really going to miss.

"It's just really hard because we are really chose and, we've been with each other a lot of hours over those years," said Amy Marshall.  "It's just really kind of sad."

"You know some of us really gotten to know each other well over the year's, and it's just going to be sad losing some of these people," said John Voyos.

"It's family. We are probably closer than brothers and sisters. We joke around.
We have a great time," said Schmidt.

"We fight like brothers and sisters too, but you know when we have great celebrations everyone is there, everyone is part of it," said Marshall.

"I watched people get married. I watched people start families," said Renae Evans-Griess.

"Sometimes we know more about each other than we know about our family's," said Marshall.

"I love this job. I just don't know if I'm going to be able to find something else again," said Schmidt.

"I'm moving to Lincoln, Nebraska. I'm going to be working for Midwest out there as a paramedic, and hopefully try to get on Lincoln Fire at some point," said Voyos.

"We're going to miss everybody. It's going to be sad not being in an ambulance," said Marshall.

"It's just really hard to know now when I see an ambulance, it's not you guys. It's not the people that I love, not the people I have become a family with, so I just thank all of you so much for being a part of my life and touching me and I hope we can all stay in touch as much as possible," said Evans-Griess.

Employees last day at Rural/Metro will be February 29th.
