A Democrat candidate for the Senate seat speaks out in response to republicans who say they don't have a strong replacement for Ben Nelson.
Earlier this week Chuck Hassebrook announced his decision to be a Democratic party candidate for the open U.S. Senate seat and Sunday he met with people in Grand Island, and says
he's encouraged by the response he's been receiving.
"People want to get involved, people want to help," said Dem. Senate candidate, Chuck Hassebrook. "There's a lot of excitement. It's a critical time in America and people have a sense that this is a critical time to set America on the right course.
"U.S. Department of Agriculture spent six times as much to subsidize the 20 biggest farms in Nebraska as spend to create economic opportunity for 65,000 Nebraskans of counties suffering the worst population laws. That is just wrong and we need to fix it," said Hassebrook.
Hassebrook looks to fill the seat of longtime Senator Ben Nelson, and has taken some advice from him.
You have to work hard that's the biggest bit of advice. These are tough fights you have to think carefully about what you say, you have know what to say before you're saying it," he said. "You have to work hard and be who you are and stand for it."
Republicans have made no secret about the Democrats candidate not being as strong as Nelson, and it's a challenge Hassebrook has embraced
"I love being underestimated. I've won many elections in this state and every time I won as an underdog," he said. "I like being an underdog and I like being underestimated because it gives you a better shot."
He also mentioned that he has experience of 35 years for fighting to make things better for
rural Nebraska makes him a strong candidate. As well as continuing creating opportunities for small business and making small towns stronger.
