Two men have been arrested for theft in North Platte after they were found rummaging through cars near an area business.

Cousins Gary Barnett, 59, and Jerry Barnett, 51, were arrested Friday after police received a report of two transients stealing from peoples' cars.

Police located the pair rummaging through vehicles at Tri-State Spas, and say they had large quantities of loose change in their pockets.

The men were arrested and lodged in the Lincoln County Detention Center on theft charges.

Gary Barnett was released Monday and continued to cause trouble for North Platte residents, a press release from the North Platte Police Department says.

Between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. that day, he allegedly stole a white 1995 GMC pickup from the area of Front and Sycamore streets near Kildare Lumber.

Around 11 p.m. that night, North Platte police were notified by Plainville, Kansas, police that he had been involved in a pursuit with the stolen vehicle.

A resident in Stockton, Kansas, reported Gary Barnett to police for drunk driving after he stopped to ask directions.

Plainville, Kansas, police located and attempted to stop the vehicle Gary Barnett was driving, and began a pursuit when he wouldn't stop for authorities.

Gary Barnett allegedly drove the pickup through a pasture and abandoned it on foot before police eventually caught him.

He was arrested and transported to the Rooks County Jail in Kansas.

The vehicle was reported to have been totaled.
