Officials Urge Extreme Caution for July 4 Holiday

Posted: Updated:

Emergency management and fire officials are warning people to exercise extreme caution with fireworks and all ignition sources throughout the July 4 holiday and the week.

Conditions are exceptionally dry and fire-ready with predictions of continued hot and dry weather.  Potential thunderstorm activity and untimely lightning storms complicate an already serious scenario.

Several large and uncontrolled wildland fires are burning in Nebraska and surrounding states. "It is extremely dry, and fire hazards are high," Tim Buskirk, Bessey District ranger, said. "We just ask for everyone's help to prevent human-caused fires."

The Nebraska State Fire Marshal's Office and the Nebraska Emergency Management agency would like to encourage people to consider attending professional fireworks displays. However, they also alert people that it is important to practice all fireworks safety tips including:

  • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.
  • Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.
  • After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.
