Dogs, Kids "Paws" to Read Together

Posted: Updated:

Kids get their paws on a good book, with help from some four-legged friends.

The "special reading program" at the Grand Island Public Library got a special visitor on Thursday as our own Steve White shared stories.

But Steve was upstaged by the real stars, including Angus T. Loner, a dog featured on the Animal Planet network.

The "Paws for Reading" program uses animals to help kids who need the extra boost.

Humane Society Director Laurie Dethloff said, "Sometimes reading is considered, if you can't read, a handicap and people make fun of you and shelter dogs have been made fun of and aren't appreciated so they're a good support network for each other."

The dogs and their people have been spending time with kids this summer as they read together.
