Grand Island – Road resurfacing in Grand Island will cause extended closures of certain streets.

The city of Grand Island Public Works Department announces the asphalt resurfacing of various streets is scheduled to begin the week of June 16 and run through August 31.

Asphalt resurfacing is planned at the following locations:

  • Eddy Street – Fourth Street to 10th Street
  • West Second Street – Webb Road to St. Joe Branch Railroad Tracks
  • Johnstown Road – Old Highway 30 to U.S. Highway 30

On Eddy Street and West Second Street, work will consist of removing the top surface of the asphalt pavement and overlaying 3" to 3-1/2" new asphaltic concrete.  Removal will be accomplished by milling, which is the grinding up of asphalt that can then be recycled.

Johnstown Road will receive a 1-1/2" overlay.

The segments on Eddy Street and West Second Street will be closed when work is occurring.  It is anticipated each location may be closed up to three weeks.

Eddy Street will be closed beginning Monday, July 16.  Traffic on Eddy Street will be detoured to Lincoln Avenue.

After the asphaltic concrete work is completed, Streets Division employees will replace the pavement marking and adjust manhole covers to the elevated surface.

Public Works staff performed engineering to ensure good performance of the new asphalt.  Cores were taken at each location and evaluated to determine appropriate milling and resurfacing strategies.

Engineering staff will be on site observing work to ensure quality construction performance and compliance with the specifications.

The project was awarded to Gary Smith Construction of Grand Island.  The total contract for the project is $309,968.

Updated street closure information on the project can be accessed on the city website by going to http://www.grand-island.com/2012projects.  Upon request, Public Works will provide advance notice prior to work starting at any location.
