Child and Adult Immunization Info.

Posted: Updated:

Most people will receive immunizations at some point in their life. Below is a list of immunizations that most people receive, and some things to know about vaccines.

By two years of age, most will receive:

  • 4 Dtap,
  • 3 Polio,
  • 1 MMR,
  • 4 Hib,
  • 3 Hep B,
  • 4 PCV7,
  • 3 Rotovirus,
  • 2 Hep A and
  • 1 Varivax.

Most children will, at their required kindergarten physical, receive:

  • DtaP, which provides protection against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis,
  • IPV, which provides protections against polio,
  • MMR, which provides protection against measles, mumps and rubella and
  • Varicella, which provides protection against chickenpox.

At the required seventh grade physical, most children will receive:

  • Tdap, protection against tetanus and pertussis,
  • Varicella (second dose), if it hasn't already been received, or a case of chicken pox already documented,
  • MCV, which may be suggested to protect against meningitis and
  • HPV, which is a three dose series that protects against some strains of human papillomavirus.

Adults may also qualify to receive some immunizations, such as:

  • Influenza, given every year to protect against seasonal influenza,
  • Tdap, given once and then boostered with Td will protect against tetanus, diphtheria and  pertussis,
  • Hepatitis B, is given in a series of three vaccinations and should be considered for adults that have not been previously vaccinated against Hepatitis B,
  • Hepatitis A, may be considered for some, and is usually given in two doses,
  • HPV, given through age 26, and protects against some strains of human papillimavirus,
  • Zoster, is given once around age 60, and protects against shingles,
  • Pneumococcal, is usually given once at or after 65 years of age. It protects against pneumonia.

It is important to ask your doctor about the best time and type of seasonal influenza vaccine for you and your child.

Other vaccines may be recommended for both children and adults based on medical conditions, travel and other factors.
