Former Keith County Attorney Convicted of Theft

Posted: Updated:

John Edwards, former Keith County Attorney, has been convicted of a Class 3 felony for theft.

Edward's theft was discovered during the county's annual audit by the Nebraska state auditor. The theft involved thousands of dollars in public funds under his control as a county official.

Deann Haeffner and the audit team of the Nebraska State Auditor's office discovered the theft in the course of an annual audit of the county. Haeffner testified in the criminal court proceeding as to her audit findings.

State Auditor Mike Foley stated today that he is pleased that justice has been served in the case and complimented Haeffner for her meticulous and professional audit work.

"Edwards was the chief criminal prosecutor in Keith County and has now learned that he is not above the law," said Foley.

Edwards was sentenced Wednesday in Keith County District Court to restitution, jail time, 1200 hours of community service, nine months of house arrest and a psychological evaluation.
