Middle school can be a stressful time for many kids. There are a lot of new changes, but there are ways to make the big change to a new school easier.
Lockers
- Explain to your child that they are able to keep all their belongings in one
place and personalize it however they want.
- Ease fears by getting a combination lock and
practicing on it at home before school starts.
- Discuss with your child the advantages of having a locker
over carrying a backpack everywhere.
Campus/School
- Explore the school's website to familiarize
the student with the school building and it's surroundings.
- Take a tour of the school (if the school allows this).
- Print off a map for the student to carry
with them for the first couple of days.
Schedule/Classes
- Review the schedule with your student and
talk about the advantages of having different classrooms and classroom teachers.
- Encourage your student to ask for help when
needed.
- It may seem scary to walk down the crowded hallway, but just re-assure the student and have them find a
"buddy" in similar classes to walk with in the halls to and from classes.
