UNK Enrollment High Despite Budget Issues

Posted: Updated:

It's one thing for a campus to have a record enrollment, it's quite another to do that while battling a budget deficit.

UNK has done just that, having the highest attendance in 16 years. It hasn't been easy though. Budget cuts have made an impact making things leaner across campus, while trying not to hurt the teaching capacity.

Officials say the record enrollment just shows they can do more with less.

"For so long people have said you've gotta do more with less, and I think we've really done this particularly with the last 10 years we've had a lot of budget deductions," said UNK Chancellor Doug Kristensen. "And I think the last 9 out of 10 years we've had a decrease where we've had to reallocate, we've had to take away things on campus and redeploy them someplace else on campus, and I think we've done that efficiently."

This is the ninth year in a row that UNK, the smallest campus in the university system, has seen an increase in students.
