Inches from Death: Accident in GI

Posted: Updated:

Inches from death, but unharmed, a Grand Island toddler awakes from her nap when an SUV crashes through her bedroom.

The accident happened Sunday afternoon, when police said an SUV and a pickup were in the area near 6th and Wheeler in Grand Island. The pickup didn't yield at a stop sign to oncoming traffic. Police said that's when the SUV was struck and that driver mistakenly hit the gas instead of the break.

The SUV then went through a the front yard of a home, through the fence, and clipped the bedroom of the toddler before hitting the neighbor's parked pickup and coming to a stop.

"This wouldn't have been that severe of an accident if the driver hadn't mistaken the gas for the brake," said officer Butch Hurst, with Grand Island Police Department.

Neighbors in the area said it was terrifying, hearing a loud crash then coming outside to see the contents of the young child's bedroom scattered. "When you start running into houses it was pretty amazing no one was hurt," said Hurst.

The driver of the pickup that failed to yield has been cited but not arrested.
