Construction Forces New Route for UNK Homecoming Parade

Posted: Updated:

The University of Nebraska at Kearney Homecoming and Band Day parade will take a new route this year due to the road construction on Second Avenue.

"In past years, we have crossed Second Avenue," said Heather Wolf, assistant director for Student Activities.  "However, because Second Avenue is a major street that is under construction, we are unable to close another street, 25th Street, for the parade. With those two options gone, we knew that we were going to need to stay south of 25th Street and not cross Second Avenue."

The parade, which takes place Saturday, Sept. 22, at 10 a.m., will begin at the Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA) and head south on Central Avenue, turn right onto Railroad Street to Third Avenue, then turn left on Third Avenue.

At 21st Street, the parade will turn left then left again onto Eighth Avenue and a final right turn onto 20th Street. The parade will end at the West Co. parking lot at 923 W Railroad. The parade check-in will be held at Zion Lutheran on 24th Street and Avenue C.

There will be two announcers along the new route-- one downtown on Central Avenue and another near Pioneer Park. Judging will take place outside of Bruce's Furniture near 21st Street and Central Avenue.

"We are excited about the route for this year and think that it will be neat to try," Wolf said.

The parade is just part of the school's homecoming activites that take place Sept. 17-22. For more information about the events and a full map of the parade go to http://www.unk.edu/homecoming.
