Strudel Dough:
Mix well. Should be a soft dough, but pull away from bowl and hands easily. Let rest for a few hours, overnight is even better. Roll out only to a rough shape. Stretch dough slowly until thin enough to see through.
Pour a generous layer of butter on. Layer on thinly sliced apples about 1-2 inch thickness.
Sprinkle layer of crushed animal crackers (nilla wafers or graham crackers are fine). Sprinkle cinnamon and sugar to taste. Add just a touch of mace if animal crackers were not used.
Gently roll up in towel. Place on pan and brush on butter. Sprinkle poppy seed if desired.
As you bake it, bast with juices for a nice brown finish.
