Kearney City Council Approves A New Apartment Complex

Posted: Updated:

A new apartment complex will be built on the corner of 56th street and 17th avenue in Kearney. It was decided by unanimous vote by the Kearney city council and the project now gets the green light to start building.

Will this be the start of a housing boom in Kearney?

"Yes, by all means," said Jack McSweeney who works at Century 21 Midlands and sits on the Kearney planning commission.

"The market in Kearney, Nebraska is unbelievable because when we get together with agents from around the country which we do several times a year, they can't believe what kind of a market we have when we tell them we don't have enough inventory," said McSweeney.

But that might change with this new apartment complex it will have a total of 102 units and 220 parking stalls. There will be two 24 unit buildings and two 27 unit buildings.

Also added will be canopy trees dotting the property and evergreen trees on the south end.

Housing officials hope these new living opportunities will help the business sector.

"Companies that exist out here tell us well if we could find good new applicant people to move here where do they live. So we're trying to get more housing available which therefore companies can bring in more employees," said McSweeney.

With even more apartment complexes on the docket McSweeney hopes the housing shortage will be solved.

"Hopefully that takes care of the need for a lot of that housing. I just hope we don't swing the pendulum on the other side and have an oversupply," said McSweeney.
