Voters Decide if Nebraska State Senators are Eligible for a Third Term

Posted: Updated:

This November Nebraska voters will have the chance to decide if state senators are eligible to serve a third term.

Prior to 2001 state senators didn't have term limits. Nebraska is the only state in the nation that allows senators to have only two terms.

State Senator Tom Carlson believes new, fresh ideas are important to the legislature, however serving two terms is just not enough time to learn the ropes. The idea behind a three term limit is to provide a better balance between gaining experience and bringing in new ideas.

"You have to learn how to present a bill," said Carlson. "You have to learn how to present it to a committee in a public hearing, answer questions, overcome obstacles, there's a lot of issues, it takes time."

If voters pass the new term limit, state senators will be able to serve for twelve years, as opposed to the current eight year limit.
