Nebraska in the war . . .
1 infantry regiment
3 cavalry regiments
35 Nebraskans were killed in action and another 204 died of diseases, which was typical.
One regiment was the 2nd Nebraska Cavalry.
Organized at Omaha in October of 1862 and assigned to duties at Fort Kearney guarding the frontier. Later ordered to Sioux City in April of 1863 and saw action against the "Indians" in the Dakota Territory. Mustered out in December of 1863.
It is interesting to note that some who served at Fort Kearney were former Confederates who later changed their allegiance and were referred to as "galvanized Yankees."
One member of the 2nd Nebraska was Private James Huff age 17, possibly born in Indiana.
