An oil tank at a North Platte rail yard exploded Thursday afternoon starting a fire.

A 6,000-gallon oil tank blew its top off around 12:30 p.m. Thursday at the Bailey Rail Yard in North Platte.

Union Pacific spokesman Mark Davis says the North Platte Fire Department had to use foam to fight the resulting fire at the railroad's rail yard. It took about an hour to extinguish the blaze inside tank.

Fire Battalion Chief Bill Kleinow says the tank top landed about 50 yards away from where the rest of the barrel was standing.

Officials say no one was injured in the explosion.

The cause of the blast is being investigated.
