Antique Farm Equipment Put to Good Use

Posted: Updated:

The fifth annual Prairie Loft Harvest Celebration in Hastings included activities from guided hikes to hay wagon rides, and it was all about agriculture appreciation.

Kids said they enjoyed learning about agriculture through the interactive experience.

"I can do this all day long and all night long," said Andrew Towery. Towery was one of the many kids lining up to play with an antique corn sheller, learning about how far farming technologies have come.

The hand operated corn sheller was one of the antiques used in the outdoor education experience.

Event volunteer Elmer Spurrier, attended with the Platte Valley Antique Machinery Association. Spurrier said, "I think it's really important, kids today need to know what their heritage was and how their ancestors and grandparents used to do it."

The kids had the chance to compare classics with modern day technology.

Organizers said the educational experience is a large part of the harvest celebration.

Executive director of Prairie Loft, Amy Sandeen, said "Prairie Loft's mission is to teach agriculture appreciation and outdoor education; from nature hikes to llamas, and goats, and chickens the old and new farm equipment … see that whole culture of where we are and where we live."
