Kearney Community Steps Out Against Violence

Posted: Updated:

October is domestic violence awareness month, and the Kearney community is taking extra steps to ensure safety for all who go through it.

Monday evening, Kearney residents and UNK students joined forces with the S.A.F.E. Center in a vigil and walk to 'Step Out Against Violence.' Now in its sixth year, this event honors victims and survivors of domestic violence and sexual abuse.

The S.A.F.E. Center handles hundreds of cases, so this walk is just one more way to spread awareness.

"We hope that people leave tonight being able to say "no more" to domestic violence and sexual assault," said S.A.F.E. Center's Executive Director Nikki Gausman. "And finding ways they can implement in their community and work place and their homes to make sure that violence is not tolerated."

"I hope to be able to know how to handle situations like that if myself is ever in that situation," said UNK student Megan Schut. "Or if I have friends or family or anybody else I would definitely know what to tell them, how to get them help."

About 125 people took part in Monday's walk which is a kick off to the 10th annual Safety and Wellness conference.
