Winter is knocking at the door and the cooler temperatures have many thinking about their health and how to stay well this season.
The flu is off to a much earlier start this year – one case is already confirmed in Douglas County. Getting vaccinated is a great way to keep you and your family flu free this year and local pharmacies, like Medicap, are stocked up on the vaccine.
"We have noticed that the season has started earlier this year," said Medicap Pharmacist Jerry Jensen. "Make sure you get your flu shot. We encourage everyone to get their flu shot ages six-months and older."
The shot is a safe and effective way to arm your family against the virus. Despite some common misconceptions, receiving the vaccine does not increase your risk of contracting the virus.
"The influenza vaccine given via shot is a killed virus, so it doesn't have the capability of causing you to get the flu like some people do think," said Jensen.
Jensen also said that some people may experience some redness or soreness at the injection site, fatigue or feel achy but that this is not the flu – these symptoms are just common side effects of the vaccine.
The shot is available by appointment at Medicap and costs 25-dollars without insurance, although most plans will cover the full cost of the shot.
The young and elderly are especially susceptible to the virus and those with chronic diseases and pregnant women are highly recommended to get the shot.
