Sandy Creek School Plans to Move Forward After Student is Killed in Crash

Posted: Updated:

Sandy Creek Public School officials are making plans to move forward as they honor a senior that died in an accident Friday night.

The crash occurred Friday around 8:15 p.m. on Highway 74 and county Road O near Fairfield, Neb. The driver of the car, 18-year-old Casie Gibbs, was driving northbound on county Road O when she drove in front of a pickup truck traveling eastbound on Highway 74. Gibbs was pronounced dead at the scene.

The school offered counseling sessions over the weekend for anyone that needed to talk, and will continue to offer counseling services throughout the week for students.

Dr. Randall Gilson, superintendent of Sandy Creek Public Schools, says, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Casie Gibbs and also to the students and families of everyone involved in the accident."

"In the best interest of students, faculty, and the community, all school events will go on as planned," added Gilson. The school will be hosting the first round of conference volleyball games Monday night. The volleyball team will be wearing purple ribbons in their hair in honor of Casie.

Three other students were in the vehicle with Gibbs at the time of the accident. Two of the three, along with the driver of the pickup truck, 50-year-old Kenneth J. Shuck of Edgar, Neb., were taken to Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital where they were treated and released.

The remaining passenger in the car was life-flighted to Lincoln and is still recovering from injuries.

An autopsy has been ordered, and the accident has been reconstructed by Nebraska State Patrol.

NSP is assisting the Clay County Sheriff's Office with investigating.
