It's the very nature of a firefighter to help others, they participate in several community service projects and charity fundraisers. Now, firefighters in North Platte are taking on a new battle, fighting cancer.
North Platte firefighters are wearing special shirts all week long to help raise breast cancer awareness. They are also selling them. Proceeds go to Gifts of Hope, an organization that helps cancer patients during treatment.
"Which is a real worthy cause and helps ladies that are experiencing some of the worst days of their lives," Paul Pederson, NPFD's fire chief said.
"It's great to give back to such an expensive disease," said firefighter Shayna Dunn. "It's one of those that are typically you're able to survive if you can get the treatment, and you can pay for it and everything."
Shirts are $20 for adults and $15 for kids. If you would like to buy one visit http://ci.north-platte.ne.us/government/depts/fire/.
