Kearney Makes Progress on Capital Improvements Projects

Posted: Updated:

The city of Kearney is making strides towards its capital improvement projects around town.

One of the projects recently completed is the building of an inclusive playground at Harmon Park. It was designed for individuals of all ages with different physical capabilities.

The playground, retaining wall, rubberized tile is all finished with irrigation, sod and landscaping to follow. The park was funded by donations and a special sales tax.

Meanwhile, phase one of the Second Avenue construction project is near completion.

On Thursday, crews poured the remainder of what they're doing for the stretch of road between 25th and 32nd streets, with hopes to resume normal traffic flow by the end of November. Officials say it's not quite done yet.

"It'll be back to normal traffic through winter then first thing next spring they'll start the whole process over again on the east side," said Kearney Public Works Director Rod Wiederspan. "Anticipating it'll be done, not knowing what the weather's gonna do next spring, but anticipating it will be done and back to normal hopefully by Cruise Nite next year."

This portion of Second Avenue was the oldest section to be poured back in the early 1960's and  most needed the improvements.
