Starting Monday, Nov. 19, the Grand Island Social Security office will be open to the public Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. except for Wednesdays, when the office will close at noon.
The change in public hours should help agency employees complete their regular tasks without needing overtime, which has not been allowed since Congress has reduced funding to the agency.
The office will also be closed to the public November 23, the day after Thanksgiving. Employees will use that day to reduce the office's backlogged work.
The change in office hours applies to all offices across the United States.
Most Social Security services do not require a visit to a local office. Many services, including applying for retirement, disability or Medicare benefits, signing up for direct deposit, replacing a Medicare card, obtaining a proof of income letter or informing us of a change of address or telephone number are available at www.socialsecurity.gov or by dialing our toll-free number, 1-800-772-1213.
People who are deaf or hard of hearing may call 1-800-325-0778. Many of the agency's online services also are available in Spanish at www.segurosocial.gov.
